Why should I upgrade my tank style water heater?
Traditional water heaters have tanks that store 40+ gallons of water and continually heat it throughout the day. Basically, these tanks waste 24-34% natural gas just keeping water hot when it is not even used by residents in the home. These tanks will start costing more to operate when the gas prices increase by 20.9% in January 2024. See rate increase here.
What are signs that my water heater is about to fail?
There are several signs and symptoms that indicate a water heater is failing or on the verge of failure. Some common signs include:
1. Age: If your water heater is around 10-15 years old, it is nearing the end of its lifespan and may start showing signs of failure.
2. Rusty water: If you notice rusty or discolored water coming out of your faucet, it could be a sign that the inside of your water heater is corroded and failing.
3. Leaks: Any visible leaks around the water heater or pooling water underneath it are clear indicators of a problem. Leaks can be caused by a cracked tank or faulty valves.
4. Strange noises: If you hear strange popping, rumbling, or banging noises coming from the water heater, it might be a sign of sediment buildup or a failing heating element.
5. Insufficient hot water: If your water heater is struggling to provide enough hot water for your needs, it may be a sign that it is losing efficiency and nearing failure.
6. Pilot light issues: If you have a gas water heater and the pilot light keeps going out or has a yellowish color instead of blue, it could indicate a problem with the burner or gas supply.
7. Increased energy bills: A failing water heater often requires more energy to heat the water, resulting in higher utility bills. If you notice any of these signs or symptoms, it is recommended to have your water heater inspected or serviced by a professional to determine if it needs repair or replacement.
How does a tankless water heater work?
A tankless water heater works by heating water on demand as it flows through the unit. When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water enters the heater and passes through a heat exchanger, where it is rapidly heated by a gas burner. The heated water then flows out of the unit and to the desired faucet or shower. Since there is no storage tank, tankless water heaters provide an endless supply of hot water as long as there is a sufficient flow rate. They are more energy-efficient compared to traditional water heaters because they don’t constantly heat and store large amounts of water.
What are the benefits of a tankless water heater?
They save energy, save space, deliver endless hot water and lower utility bills.
1. Energy Efficiency: Tankless water heaters are energy-efficient. They only heat water when it is needed, avoiding the constant energy usage to keep a tank of water heated.
2. Endless Hot Water: It heats the water on-demand, providing a continuous supply of hot water as long as needed.
3. Space Saving: They can be mounted on walls creating more storage or living space.
4. Longevity: Tankless water heaters have a longer lifespan than traditional tanks, 20 years or more, saving money on replacement costs.
5. Lower Utility Bills: Tankless water heaters can help reduce utility bills since they only heat water when it is needed. This energy efficiency can result in significant savings over time.
6. Cleaner Water: Unlike storage tanks, which can accumulate rust and scale over time, tankless water heaters provide cleaner water since there is no stored water sitting in the tank.
How do I find out how old my water heater is?
There is a label on your water heater with the model and serial number. A date can sometimes be found nearby. If you can not find it, then send the model and serial number to us and we can look it up in our database.

The investments are authorized by the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (Assembly Bill 32, Nunez, 2016).
